"...each according to his or her possibilities, profession and responsibilities, should feel in themselves an obligation to love and serve life, from its beginning to its natural end. It is, in fact, everyone's duty to welcome human life as a gift to be respected, protected and promoted, even more so when it is fragile and in need of attention and care, either before birth or when it is in its final stages."
~Pope Benedict XVI, Welcome Life, Before Birth and in its Final Stages, February 3, 2008~

Planned Parenthood is building a 45,000 sq. ft. abortion facility on Beech Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Portland, OR.  Walsh Construction and Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects are helping them to construct the killing center.   In speaking about the abortion facility, Dr. Greenberg, CEO of Planned Parenthood, stated, "We continue to exercise careful stewardship of the resources invested by our donors, and the agency maintains strong financial stability. The Board of Directors has approved plans to conduct a $12.5 million Regional Services Center Capital Campaign to develop a 45,000 square foot facility that will include a medical and administrative building in N/NE Portland, as well as a state-of-the art Surgicenter designed to increase access to abortion care in anticipation of continuing political challenges." (PPCW Annual Report 2005-2006, p. 3)  "Records show that the bulk of Planned Parenthood’s clinic income is derived from abortions, especially now that donations are dropping. In its 2005-2006 fiscal year, Planned Parenthood performed a record 265,000 abortions nationwide. That accounted for about a third of $345 million in income from clinics. The group reported it was almost $56 million in the black and received more than $305 million in taxpayer funding." (Beech Street abortion clinic emerged from failed search for tenants Please advise businesses, churches, senior housing facilities, medical clinics, and cities not to contract with  Walsh Construction and Ankrom Moisan, due to their involvement in building Planned Parenthood's Portland killing center.  Ankrom Moisan has offices in both Portland, OR and Seattle, WA.  Don't forget to pray for all those involved in building this abortion facility that they may realize the error of their ways.

On Friday, February 15, 2008, Plan B advocates tried to force pharmacists and pharmacy owners to sell the "morning-after pill" which can cause early abortions.  However, the Honorable Judge Leighton upheld his November ruling which allowed pharmacists and drugstore owners to follow their consciences and abstain from selling Plan B for moral reasons.  Please pray that the final outcome of the trial is the same.

Mary E. of  Abortion in Washington has some observations about Judge Leighton's ruling on her blog.

For information on why some pharmacists do not want to sell this particular drug, please see "Why do pharmacists oppose Plan B?"

40 Days for Life is taking place in 59 cities in 31 states, and Bellingham, Issaquah, Kitsap County, Olympia, Spokane, and Tacoma are among them!  Please remember to pray and fast during this Lenten season for an end to abortion in America, and for a successful 40 Days for Life campaign, both nationally, and here locally.

A lot of new individuals and churches are stepping forward to get involved in this 40 Days for Life campaign!   For many, it will be their first step into pro-life work!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the many volunteers who have committed early on to participate in a vigil.  For those of you who have not yet had the chance to do so, I encourage you to sign up as soon as possible.  If you are able to commit to an hour a week, it would really help out.  In past 40 Days for Life campaigns, many cities have been able to draw as many as several hundred to 1,000 new people into local pro-life work through these outreach efforts. Obviously, this is a very important and fruitful aspect of the 40 Days for Life campaign!  You can help 40 Days for Life to accomplish this in our community by signing up today to participate in a vigil and helping to spread the word among your friends, family, and peers.  More information about 40 Days for Life can be found at www.40daysforlife.com.

Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather.  Multiple layers, hats, gloves and umbrellas are recommended.  Although we are not dealing with the intense weather conditions that those in such places as Minneapolis/St.Paul are --- who happen to be conducting their vigil round the clock, 24 hours a day, in sub-zero weather --- it can still get cold if you are not adequately prepared.

I encourage each one of you to sign up to receive the daily pro-life devotionals and campaign success stories that will be sent out by David Bereit, the National Campaign Director for 40 Days for Life, throughout the campaign.  It is always such a joy to hear about the wonderful things God is accomplishing through this nation-wide event.

Please see "Events" for information about local locations.

"Bad law and defective moral reasoning produce the evasive language to justify evil. Nothing else can explain the verbal and ethical gymnastics required by elected officials to justify their support for partial-birth abortion, a procedure in which infants are brutally killed during the process of delivery. The same sanitized marketing is now deployed on behalf of physician-assisted suicide, fetal experimentation and human cloning. Each reduces the human person to a problem or an object. Each can trace its lineage in no small part to Roe."
